Challenging, especially the last week.

This course was great at first—very easy to follow along with. The first five units were very consistent. HOWEVER, unit six was disorganized and certain sections had only video tutorials, which was very jarring for me and my own personal learning/note-taking style. Despite the inconsistency, I passed the class, and would highly recommend this course to college students who are looking to get their generals out of the way for a small amount of money.

Some tutorials were lacking and it was very difficult to learn everything in this subject without the guidance of a regular teacher. However, it should be said that math has never been my best subject.

I was really worried about taking this course. However, I did well, but it took a lot of work.....especially during the last two units. I did use the tutoring service once and they were extremely helpful where the online tutorials did not get you to the answer. A couple of issues were the practice milestone and the printout version were not always identical. Also, the online tutorial could be a little more helpful, especially the ones that only have one choice of instructors (she went to quickly and I was constantly pausing). Other than that, I found the course was interesting and very doable, no matter what levels of math you had in the past.

I enjoyed the first 4 units, but the last two were pretty rough. I would recommend breaking up the units differently so that Unit 6 especially is not so heavy. I can usually get through one unit in 5-6 hours. Unit 6 took me at least 12 hours (long enough that I lost track). I would also have appreciated having a written lesson available rather for some of the tutorials towards the middle/end of unit 6. I don't have a graphing calculator or Microsoft excel, so it was difficult to know what I needed to remember from the lessons taught by Rachel Orr-Depner, and scrolling through the transcription to find the information was rather painful.

Ryan Backman was the best instructor. I loved that I could replay the videos when I had difficulty understanding a concept. I also liked that there were other instructor videos available in case I couldn't grasp the concept. Sophia was very tolerant when I couldn't start the course as scheduled and when the Sophia website had a technical issue displaying the graphs in the milestone practice test, thus causing delay in my progress. They also helped when I had technical difficulties starting the validation milestone. Great course! Great content! Great Instructors = a great experience!!

For the most part the course ran smoothly. I found an instructor I liked and mostly used her videos with helped with consistency. Some complaints I had-- at first I would take the quizzes and use the videos but then i realized i was missing videos so I switched to going down the videos. That could be more straight forward. Second unit 6 needs improvement. I lost the ability to use the instructor I was using the whole time, I did not like the new videos that were added. These new videos were on the most difficult topics in that unit so I had to go elsewhere for information. I also found unit 6 to be too large and overwhelming. I would recommend splitting it up.

FAQ

  • Q: Does Sophia accept third-party payment for tuition, such as financial aid or military benefits?
A: Sophia courses are not eligible for most third party payment methods, and must be paid for by credit or debit card. Tuition is due at the time of course registration. Sophia offers both full and partial payment plans as part of the registration process.
  • Q: When do the courses start and how long do I have to complete a course?
A: You choose your own start date and have 60 days to complete each course. However, because the courses are self-paced, you can complete them in fewer than 60 days.
  • Q: Where do I get the textbooks for my course?
A: You do not need any textbooks for Sophia courses. All material is taught by video and text-based tutorials that are in the course room, and are included in the cost.
  • Q: How am I graded in the course?
A: Your overall score is derived from how you do on two types of assessments: Challenges, which are formative assessments, and Milestones, which are summative assessments. Sophia’s English Composition I, Foundations of English Composition, and Public Speaking courses also include written assignments, called Touchstones, that also contribute to your overall score.
  • Q: How do I know which courses I should take?
A: Consult with your academic adviser at your university to determine specifically which Sophia courses could fit into your program. You can download the course syllabus directly from our site to share with your school advisor.
