I'm a visual learner. This was one of the reasons why I chose an online course; I always wondered why I should pay a ton of money to take an in-person class when I learn best by reading from the text. Unfortunately, most of the tutorials for the course were videos that didn't seem to be particularly well done. One of the instructors had her videos transcribed, but they were laden with mistakes and verbal tics, for example, every sentence for two paragraphs in a row starting with "so," filled with "okay," or "I'm sorry, I meant this, not that." This is confusing to reader and viewer, and considering that the videos and their transcriptions are the only source of information for the site, they should have some more time put in to make them appropriate and streamlined. Overall the course was alright, I liked going at my own pace and how quickly the verification milestone was able to be completed. The whole process could just be a bit more streamlined to really make it exceptional.

This course was interesting. But much more detailed than I anticipated. To be a Gen Ed course, I thought it would be more high level. This seemed to be more geared toward someone actually going into the medical or science field. I spent much more time and a lot more note-taking on this course than any of the other Sophia courses I've taken.

This is a unique and interesting approach to the general education courses. I do feel I had a better understanding from this approach, but also felt that I could stand to do more studying during the course.

I enjoyed the class and the self-pace, the information is really hard though.

I think this one should be a model example for others. Offering 6 different learning styles, including one in Spanish, sets this one above all the other courses I've taken. I hope that this approach can be used for future and new courses added to Sophia in the future. Great class!

I found the questions at the final very difficult compared to the exams before. I didn't think it would be so difficult. Especially the proctoring was such an issue. I couldn't finish one day because the lady there had no clue what she was doing and had to wait another day to finish where I didn't have a babysitter watching my kids. Thankfully they were quite cooperative. The course as such was ok but sometimes I found the lingo not very clear, many repetitions in the speech of the instructor. I used Amanda because she has scripts of her videos but these are as I said often redundant and not very clear and to the point.

FAQ

  • Q: Does Sophia accept third-party payment for tuition, such as financial aid or military benefits?
A: Sophia courses are not eligible for most third party payment methods, and must be paid for by credit or debit card. Tuition is due at the time of course registration. Sophia offers both full and partial payment plans as part of the registration process.
  • Q: When do the courses start and how long do I have to complete a course?
A: You choose your own start date and have 60 days to complete each course. However, because the courses are self-paced, you can complete them in fewer than 60 days.
  • Q: Where do I get the textbooks for my course?
A: You do not need any textbooks for Sophia courses. All material is taught by video and text-based tutorials that are in the course room, and are included in the cost.
  • Q: How am I graded in the course?
A: Your overall score is derived from how you do on two types of assessments: Challenges, which are formative assessments, and Milestones, which are summative assessments. Sophia’s English Composition I, Foundations of English Composition, and Public Speaking courses also include written assignments, called Touchstones, that also contribute to your overall score.
  • Q: How do I know which courses I should take?
A: Consult with your academic adviser at your university to determine specifically which Sophia courses could fit into your program. You can download the course syllabus directly from our site to share with your school advisor.
